We both remember those early days in our design careers with startling clarity. The sweaty palms, racing hearts, and that desperate wish to become invisible when clients started asking questions about our work.
For Philip, it was hiding behind his copywriter at Ogilvy. For Nicky, it was being thrown into client interactions at a small design studio where there was nowhere to hide.
Despite our different journeys, we kept encountering the same fundamental challenge: client workshops are wildly unpredictable. Perfect presentations would fall apart minutes in, and crucial information would surface only after designs were well underway.
Our paths have crossed repeatedly throughout our careers, working together on and off in different contexts. The turning point came during a particularly challenging project. Over a few beers, we found ourselves being brutally honest about the parts of our job that we struggled with.
That’s when it hit us: designers have sophisticated tools for everything else we do, but when it comes to crucial client conversations, we’re all just making it up as we go along.
This realization led to the creation of We Love Sparks. We’re not trying to create revolutionary systems – we simply want to develop practical tools that help designers, creatives, and other professionals communicate more effectively and work more strategically.
Our first product emerged from our shared frustration: a tool that makes workshops less about performing and more about figuring things out together. Since then, we’ve been dedicated to creating solutions that provide structure without sacrificing flexibility, helping professionals guide conversations that actually make sense.

His passion lies in taking complex brand challenges and turning them into simple, practical solutions. He’s crafted innovative campaigns for tech giants like Sony and Amazon, while helping smaller brands find their unique voice.

Nicky Lauwerijssen
With over two decades in brand and digital design, Nicky has crafted identities at leading agencies like Wunderman and TBWA, while maintaining his own studio. His portfolio spans major brands like Brussels Airlines and BNP Paribas, alongside startups and growing businesses. He loves typography and colour. His greatest joy lies in understanding clients’ stories and translating them into visual identities that drive growth and success.
